Powerful Lion’s Mane Mushroom

Lion’s Mane (hericium erinaceus) is a large, white mushroom that derives its name from its appearance; it resembles a shaggy lion’s mane. Lion’s Mane has long been consumed as a culinary mushroom in Asian countries. It has also been used for centuries for its many health benefits. This beneficial mushroom grows on the trunks of dead broad leaf trees in forests across North America, Asia and Europe. A medicinally powerful mushroom, it is composed of two parts: the visible fruiting body (the mushroom) and the mycelium, which is the bottom structure that resembles roots. Both parts contain substances that have powerful medicinal benefits.

Immune-Boosting Capabilities

A strong immune system protects the body from bacteria, viruses, and other disease-causing pathogens. Lion’s Mane mushroom can help boost the immune system by improving gut health. Research using mice suggests that Lion’s Mane mushroom may boost the activity of the intestinal immune system. The results of a study indicates that a protein in Lion’s Mane mushroom encourages the growth of beneficial gut bacteria that help strengthen immunity. The immune-boosting effects of Lion’s Mane mushroom are very promising, but more human studies are needed.

Improves Cognitive Decline, Anxiety and Depression

Research shows Lion’s Mane mushroom can prevent dementia and cognitive decline. This powerful mushroom synthesizes two very important compounds for nerve growth, hericenones and erinacines. These compounds, derived from both the fruiting body and mycelium of the mushroom, can stimulate the growth of brain cells. Both compounds promote the biosynthesis of nerve growth factor (NGF) and therefore, have value in the prevention and treatment of dementia. Studies have also shown a possible neuro-protective effect against ischemic stroke, a condition in which a blood clot, known as a thrombus, blocks or plugs an artery leading to the brain.

Additionally, Research suggests that Lion’s Mane may help alleviate depression and anxiety. Clinical studies have demonstrated that Lion’s Mane mushroom significantly ameliorates depressive disorder, making it a potential alternative medicine for the treatment of depression.

Improves Blood Sugar Levels

Lion’s Mane mushroom also may improve blood sugar levels. Several animal studies have shown that Lion’s Mane can cause significantly lower blood sugar levels in both normal and diabetic mice. It is thought to lower blood glucose by blocking the activity of alpha-glucosidase, an enzyme which breaks down carbohydrates in the small intestine. When this enzyme is blocked, the body is unable to digest and absorb carbohydrates as effectively, resulting in lower blood sugar levels.

Additionally, high blood glucose levels are often associated with cognitive decline. Research reveals high blood sugar levels can harden arteries, increasing the risk of blockages in the brain. Obstruction of blood flow to the brain can inhibit blood supply to the nerve cells, resulting in impaired brain function. A 2015 study using mice, in which they ingested Lion’s Mane extract for six weeks, showed positive results, including lower blood sugar levels and reduced feelings of nerve pain.

Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Benefits

Research indicates Lion’s Mane mushroom contains powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds that may help reduce the impact of several illnesses, including autoimmune disorders, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer and stroke.

Lion’s Mane mushroom has been shown to help maintain healthy cholesterol. levels One in vitro study shows it can help prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which is widely believed to be one of the main causes of clogged arteries. Oxidized cholesterol molecules tend to attach to artery walls, causing them to harden, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Reducing oxidation is beneficial for heart health.

Caution: Do not take Lion’s Mane mushroom if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. As with any supplement, check with your health care provider before taking Lion’s Mane if you are currently taking any prescription medications, or have a history of allergies or asthma.

Some people may experience an allergic reaction to lion’s mane mushroom. Seek immediate medical help if you experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat, hives, or other allergy symptoms after taking lion’s mane mushroom.

I have been taking Lion’s Mane mushroom regularly for approximately three years and can personally attest to its powerful memory enhancing capabilities.
